Grandpa & Sheila’s Annual Birthday BBQ

It’s that time of year again (beginning of July) where we have our annual family birthday BBQ to celebrate my Grandpa (who’s turning 74) and Sheila (who’s turning 23) birthdays.

There’s going to be a lot of pictures so I’ll try to keep it as short as possible.

Let the fun begin!

This year we had the BBQ at my Uncle Darrick and Opee’s house…

There was a bouncy castle for the kiddies…

This is one of the biggest and coolest bouncy castles we’ve ever had at our BBQs.  It had a basketball hoop and a slide inside!

My Dad wearing Opee’s apron…

Sheila, Me, Mom & Dad (Dad was given my uncle Darrick’s apron to wear, I like the first one better!)

My Mom handed Steve the vase of flowers to hold for this picture…

Good one Mom. (She is obsessed with flowers and plants)

Alyssa, Uncle Tommy and Lindsay on Scooty…

Lindsay declining a photo op…

Uncle Rikki and Steve…

Peter, Uncle Rikki, Steve and Uncle Tommy…

Little Lindsay…big belly.  (That’s my cousin Brittany in the background.  I bet she has her eyes closed because she’s fantasizing of the upcoming yummy food)

Aimee, Sheila and I dreaming of the upcoming feast…

Please excuse my legs, I had no idea that they were that pale! It’s quite frightening actually.

Just all hanging out…

Me and my Mommy…

AJ, Jenna and uncle Rikki…

Steve, Me and “Chew T” (a.k.a. Uncle Sam)…

Jamie….who’s always ready to take a great photo…

Ya for cousins! Brittany, Jamie and my Kaylee…

My auntie Hue (pronounced “Way”)

The Feast

We like to eat!

Sticky rice with Chinese sausage and dried shrimp…

Fried crab legs…

Seafood stir fry…

Shrimp paste wrapped around a sugar cane…

Sushi from Sushi Garden

Vietnamese squid and prawn salad…

BBQ meats….

Lamb curry…

Kabobs…

The approximately 20th annual (I’m just guessing) Bon Bon Bakery St. Honor cake for my Grandpa. This cake is made to serve 40 people and I always ask to have the “bon bons” all across the top.  It’s only like an extra $2 or something, but so worth it!

I made Sheila’s favourite cake, Chocolate Bean Cake (recipe pending).  The beans might sound scary, but if made correctly, you wouldn’t be able to tell that the cake was made with a full can of black beans. The cake contains no flour at all so it’s safe for all you gluten free peeps out there.  I made an amateur mistake with the writing though.  I used…royal icing (because I had it around) instead of regular icing.  At first I thought it just melted because the cake was not refrigerated when I brought it to the party, but later that evening it dawned on me that the royal icing would get runny (and hence melt) when you add it to a moist surface (the cream cheese icing). Doh!

I also made strawberry cheesecake “Lam” cupcakes…

They were strawberry vanilla cupcakes with cream cheese icing, so they tasted like strawberry cheesecake cupcakes.

Oh and I also made a no-bake marshmallow chocolate chip cookie bar, but Jamie ate them all before I could take a picture of it.  I’m kidding, but I’m pretty sure she could have if she was allowed to.

The birthday boy and girl…

FYI my Grandpa is turning 74 (doesn’t he look great!) and was able to blow out ALL 12 candles and Sheila, who is turning 23 could only blow out 7 out of 8 candles.  Sheila’s defense was that she has asthma. (Please note it’s exercise induced asthma).  Hmmm…I don’t recall “birthday cake candle blowing” being recognized as a form of exercise.  Just saying.

Yay again for cousins! Here are all the cousins and with our grandparents…

From the oldest to youngest: Me, Sheila, Brittany, Brandon, Kaylee, Jenna, Jamie, Alyssa and Lindsay.

Dancing time…

Steve and I relaxing on the comfiest leather couch ever.  Sorry I don’t have a picture, but it’s humongous.  It could probably sit 8 people comfortably if everyone was pairing up bobsled style.

Some of the guys and a couple of the ladies…

Aimee being attacked (self provoked) by the children…..

Thanks everyone for another great BBQ!!
