Father’s Day Dinner

Me: “Hi Daddy, Happy Father’s Day! So where do you want to go for father’s day dinner?”

Dad: “Uh, I don’t know, I’ll ask Mom”.

Me: “HELLO, it’s FATHER’s day, you get to choose where you want to go.”

Dad: (Chuckles)

Me: “Well, what are you craving?”

Dad: “Mmm…I don’t know, I’ll just ask your Mom”.

So I’m still not quite sure who’s idea it was to go for Malaysian food, but I’m really glad we did because we ended up at one of my favourite restaurants, the Banana Leaf .  Everything is just packed full of flavour.  I haven’t come across a dish that I didn’t like. EVERYTHING is delicious.

The Feast

If you’ve never been to Banana Leaf, I’m sad to say that you’re missing out.  I mean, really really missing out on carby goodness.  I suggest that you get your butt down to a Banana Leaf ASAP and order 2 orders, not just 1, 2 orders of this dish:

Roti Canai
Flaky layered bread with curry dip, the Indian community’s greatest culinary contribution to Malaysia.

Shown here is two orders of roti because it’s everyone’s favourite.

This will be the best flaky-chewy-soft-bread you’ll ever have, I promise! I’ve tried roti canai from a few places now and I think (and my family as agreed) that Banana Leaf makes the best roti around along.  THE BEST! I won’t say anything more about it because you’ll just have to try it out yourself. I just want to let you know that it’s so good and addicting that I’m almost tempted to go back to Banana Leaf and have this for lunch today since I work about 3 minute walk away from here! I know, it’s dangerous working so close.

Tofu Goreng
Deep fried tofu with lettuce, bean sprout, cucumber topped with crushed peanut & sweet chili sauce.

Fresh Oysters in Peppercorn & Garlic Butter Sauce
Fresh oysters cooked with Indian black peppercorn, enriched with butter and enhanced by Chinese wine.

Anything done in the Banana Leaf “Peppercorn & Garlic Butter Sauce” is delicious.

Satay - Lamb
Malaysia’s most signature stall food, grilled marinated skewers with spiced peanut dip.

The peanut dip that this comes with is to die for.  You could probably eat it with anything.  I know I would!

King Prawns in Black Peppercorn Garlic Sauce
A dish that reflects the diversity of Malaysian cuisine: shell-on, head-on king prawns with Chinese seasonings & cooked with Indian black peppercorn, enriched with butter.

Nasi Lemak with Sambal Seafood
Coconut rice served on banana leaf with dried anchovies, cucumber, egg & peanuts, rendang beef, sambal fish, prawns, and squid.

Just a warning, the “dried anchovies” in this dish was set-your-mouth-on-fire SPICY!

Coconut Rice in Banana Leaf
Rice wrapped in fresh banana leaf cooked with coconut milk.

*Abundance of Seafood in Gulai Sauce
A taste of the ocean: scallop, prawn, fish, mussel, clam, and squid simmered in spicy turmeric coconut sauce made of tamarind, galangal, lemon grass & ginger.

*We also ordered this Abundance of Seafood in Gulai Sauce dish, but I was too busy stuffing my face and totally forgot to take a picture of it.
