Guu Otokomae (Gastown)
It was my 29th birthday on Tuesday, June 6. Yup, I said….29. Can you believe it, I sure don’t! Oh well, the number doesn’t bother me. I still feel like a spring chicken, well, on most days anyway. Actually, few weeks ago a sales person at Future Shop was shocked when she found out that I was married. She told me that she thought that I was 16. 16?! Really?! I know I look youngish, but not 16!! Geez. Well, she then went on to say that she was 24 years old and that she is hoping that she will be married by 28. She then asked me how I knew I was ready to get married. Uuuh, I’m just here to buy a camera. We had a nice little chat while she finished the transaction. She was a nice girl.
Anyways….I chose to go to Guu Otokomae for my special birthday dinner. We’ve been to Guu many times before, but only to Guu with Garlic (on Robson) and Guu Aberdeen (in Richmond). Never to the one in Gastown.

I think we got the best seat in the house! Nice view and perfect lighting for food pictures. Score!

After reading off all the dishes that we wanted to get, our server asked me “Have you been here before?”. I answered, “Yes, but not this location. Why, did we order too much food?” She replied, “Usually for two people, they order around 5-6 dishes”. We, or should I say “I” had ordered 11. I guess my answer to her question “Have you been here before” should have straight up been “Have you seen how much I can eat?”.
Let’s start the feast…
Sashimi Salad
Assorted sashimi of the day on greens dressed with guuu’d dressing and wasabi mayo.

This was so good! I wish I could eat this everyday! I dominated this dish as Steve’s not a big fan of sashimi.

Japanese Style Ahi Tuna Steak
Sweetened garlic soy sauce marinated sashimi-grade ahi tuna steak and topped with garlic chips. Only available medium rare.

Enoki Scallop
Pan-fried enoki mushrooms and scallops wrapped in bacon with mustard mayo.

This was just okay. It would be a lot better if the bacon was crispy.

Sho Lon Bo

Spicy Agedashi Tofu
Deep fried tofu in dashi broth topped with chilies and dried seaweed.

Brie Cheese
Deep fried brie cheese with a mango and blueberry sauce.

This was delicious…

Halibut Karaage
Deep fried halibut in a batter with seaweed sauce.

Nikuzyaga Croquette
Deep fried panko-crusted mashed potatoes with stewed beef, carrots and onions served with tonkatsu sauce.

Okonomiyaki
Deep-fried Japanese style cabbage and squid pancake dressed with tonkatsu sauce, wasabi mayo and mustard mayo, topped with dried bonito flakes and dried seaweed.

Were doing pretty good with all the dishes that were coming out, managing to finish them before the next one came out….but….it started to pile up so…

We made a little sampler dish of our leftovers…

Actually, I think I’m losing my game because don’t think I can eat as much as I used to since I was getting somewhat full after these dishes so far. We still had to of the largest dishes yet to come. Gulp. I guess I haven’t gotten any wiser with age….
Kimchi Pork Bibimbap
Rice in a hot stone bowl with spicy ground pork, kimchi, bean sprouts, spinach, sweet and sour daikon, dried seaweed, garlic chips and fresh egg yolk mixed together.
The picture below is of the dish after our sever mixed everything together…

Guu’s Beef Yakiudon
Guu’s original pan-fried udon with beef and mushrooms topped with dried bonito flakes and seaweed.

Frozen grapes

A little bit of left overs…

Thanks to my bestest bud/loving husband Steve for a wonderFUL birthday dinner!
After dinner we took a short walk to the famous Gastown steam clock. We were there just in time for the steam show…

As we were driving towards our house, I spotted a pink box hanging on our mailbox. I couldn’t get out of the car quick enough!

What a special surprise!! Who could it be from?!?!

My dear friend Kallie!!! Thank you, thank you for the lovely surprise!!
Thanks to everyone for all your kind birthday wishes. I felt the love.
xoxo,
Jenny
